A resident of high, sub-alpine western North America, the Engelmann spruce has a demeanor to match its habitat. Beautiful, graceful, light blue-green foliage graces outspreading branches that are usually covered in small papery cones. However, its sharp needles are as tough and unforgiving as the mountains it calls home. At lower elevations it can be found in riparian areas, yet at high elevations it often forms krummholz at tree line.
