Native to the subtropical and wet tropical areas of Queensland, Australia, the bunya is an ancient tree. With ancestors that used to grow all over the world, the bunya is the last surviving member of an ancient lineage that extends back to the Jurassic, more than 145 million years ago. Due to the size of the cones and seeds, the bunya has been an important traditional food source for aboriginal peoples of Australia for more than 50,000 years.
